Wojciech Szczesny is set to come out of retirement to join Barcelona, just a month after retiring, as the former Arsenal and Juventus goalkeeper prepares to step in for the injured Marc-André ter Stegen.
Wojciech Szczesny officially declared his retirement from professional football on August 27, 2024. Following Ter Stegen's injury, Barcelona are seeking a goalkeeper, and the Polish keeper is expected to sign a short-term contract with the club.
The 34-year-old former Arsenal goalkeeper announced his retirement last month. However, just weeks later, the ex-Juventus player is expected to change his mind, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that Szczesny will sign a one-year contract with Barcelona.
Romano also mentioned that the Polish international will undergo a medical soon and join the La Liga giants as a free agent.
This follows Barcelona’s first-choice goalkeeper, Ter Stegen, rupturing his patella tendon during the team's win over Villarreal last weekend. While the 32-year-old underwent successful knee surgery, the length of his recovery remains uncertain. With Barcelona leading La Liga, securing a high-quality replacement is crucial, and they may turn to veteran Szczesny, who left Juventus this summer.
Earlier on Wednesday, Wojciech Szczesny stated;
"Yes, I’m now in talks and considering Barca move. It’d be disrespectful if I didn’t consider this option for my career. Barca is one of the best clubs in the world.”
Barcelona will next play Getafe on Wednesday night in La Liga, aiming to increase their lead at the top of the table. They will then travel to Osasuna on Saturday. It is uncertain when Szczesny will officially sign and become available to play for Barcelona. In the meantime, Iñaki Peña Sotorres will be in goal.
