A lot of people didn’t know this, but in the past—especially around the late 19th and early 20th centuries—wristwatches were often called “wristlets.” Back then, pocket watches were the standard for men, and wearing a watch on the wrist was seen as something unusual, even feminine. Originally, “wristlets” were mainly worn by women as a kind of jewelry with a timepiece—until World War I happened and it changed the narrative. During World War I, soldiers started wearing wristlets for practicality—imagine being on a battlefield with bullets flying; you don’t have time to dig for a pocket watch. Wristlets made it quicker and just made more sense in combat. After the war, wristwatches became more accepted and widely worn by men too, and the term “wristwatch” gradually replaced “wristlet.”
